[News] Nine New SATREPS Projects Selected by JST for FY2012

Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) has announced on May 31 the new projects selected under the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program for FY2012.

SATREPS is a collaborative program between JST and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to acquire new knowledge that leads to solving issues of global scale and to improve the level of science and technology based on the needs of developing countries, and to implement these achievements into society in the future.

JST called for bilateral project proposals from Japanese researchers in four research areas - Environment/Energy, Bioresources, Natural Disaster Prevention and Infectious Diseases Control, and interdisciplinary areas. Nine new projects have been provisionally selected (project title/term may change), including three projects collaborating with Asian researchers (described below).

Projects collaborating with Asian researchers:
"Decentralized biomethane energy system for rural development"
by Professor HASEGAWA Tatsuya, EcoTopia Science Institute, Nagoya University with Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi)

"Creation of green innovative industry from oil palm plantation for the Bornean bio-diversity conservation"
by Professor SHIRAI Yoshihito, Graduate School of Life Science and Systems Engineering, Kyushu Institute of Technology with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)

"Innovative bio-production in Indonesia (iBioI): integrated bio-refinery strategy to promote biomass utilization using super-microbes for fuels and chemicals production"
by Assistant Professor OGINO Chiaki; Graduate School of Engineering, Kobe University with Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (UI)
