[Event Report] Developing Database Technologies Together: NBDC/DBCLS BioHackathon 2011

From Japan On Nov. 4, 2011

Translated from JST Topics September 14, 2011

National Bioscience Database Center (NBDC),
Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST)

"NBDC/DBCLS BioHackathon 2011" was held by NBDC-JST, and the Database Center for Life Science (DBCLS) of the Research Organization of Information and Systems (ROIS) for 6 days from August 21-26, 2011 in Kyoto, Japan.

This annual event is unique in the sense that it brings together representatives from major biological database providers, database integration engineers and software developers to discuss the issues facing biological databases and the development of prototypes.
This year's theme was "Development of technologies for handling Linked Data in life science".

On the first day, August 21st, a symposium at the Campus Plaza Kyoto attracted about 80 participants from Japan and around the world. Presentations along the theme and active discussions were carried out. From the second day of the event, the venue switched to the Bioinformatics Center at the Kyoto University Institute for Chemical Research, where participants were divided into groups which conducted spirited development of technologies based on the first day's discussion.
