Search help
There are four types of search boxes in this portal:
Full site search (1), S&T links search (2), search inside each category (3). and S&T Paper keyword search (4).
Also, S&T Papers can be browsed by subject area (5) and by journal titles (6), and is linked to external e-journal sites in East Asian countries (7).
1. Full site search
All information collected by this portal may be searched through this search box sitting in the header. Query can include multiple keywords with various operators supported by Google Search Appliance.
2. S&T links search
The left-hand searchbox provides access to S&T related links, or useful websites collecting information on various topics and subjects.
Information may be searched by site categories, subject areas, countries and keywords. The result does not include specific postings in Articles, Reports & Commentaries / Events & Meetings / Research Opportunities / R&D Personnel / Life in Foreign Countries / S&T Related Organizations / STI Policies and Indicators category page.
Each search field is combined with the selected boolean operator (and / not). Keyword search (partial match) retrieves information from all fields except for dates, country and subject area fields. Multiple keywords (spaced) will result with information including all keywords used in the searchbox, except any keyword starting with a hyphen (-) which makes it exclude that keyword.
Example: The following will result in S&T websites which are on "Experimental User Facilities" and provided by organizations in countries other than Japan.
Example 2: The following will result in S&T websites which are on "water", not on "energy" and posted by organizations in China.
3. Search inside each category
Specific postings in each category can be narrowed at each listing page, as shown in above figure. Keyword search (partial match) retrieves information from all fields except for dates, country and subject area fields. Multiple keywords (spaced) will result with information including all keywords used in the searchbox, except any keyword starting with a hyphen (-) which makes it exclude that keyword.
All lists have options to increase the number of items per page.
Users can search:
*1 Events can be sorted by the event date, submission deadline and date of update. Past events are excluded in default and they can be viewed when the checkbox "include past events" is selected. When sorting by deadline, all coming events with past deadlines will be unavailable unless the same checkbox is selected.
4. S&T Paper keyword search
S&T Papers can be searched by titles, abstracts, authors/affiliations, journal names or all fields, combined with Boolean operator dropdowns. Results can be sorted and narrowed down by following Search Options:
- Sort: relevancy or publication year
- Narrow: publication year, publishing country, language of full text and subject area
5. Browse S&T Papers by subject area
S&T Papers can be searched by clicking on subject area, grouped in a three tier hierarchy using JST S&T dictionary subject headings as the lowest level. This search will show you the articles which have many words in their title and abstract matching the S&T dictionary words listed in the specific subject (error may exist due to mechanical indexing).
The tier tree can be expanded/collapsed with the +/- before the area name.
Results can be sorted and narrowed down by following Search Options:
- Sort: publication year
- Narrow: publication year, publishing country and language of full text
6. Browse S&T Papers by journal title
S&T Papers can be browsed by clicking through journal title list, volume/issue list and table of content.
7. Full text links for S&T Papers (data source)
The S&T Papers database comprises article metadata from external e-journal sites and full text PDF is available at each e-journal site.
The access to the full text differs among the sites:
- J-STAGE (JST, Japan): Opens an abstract page with full text link. [Authentication]: Some publishers or academic societies request subscription or pay-per-view fee to view the full text.
- NDSL (KISTI, Republic of Korea): PDF will open directly.
Note1: "Browse S&T Papers by Subject Area" delivers an experimental automated indexing by searching the metadata with all of the words related to the subject area of the JST S&T dictionary and summing up the relevancy. The indexing may not be correct due to words having multiple uses.
Note2: The sum of figures listed by the subject areas in the "Number of articles by Country and Subject Area" page does not equal the total number of papers, since many papers are indexed to multiple areas.
